Process of hand painting fabric .
- Choosing the Fabric:
Start with a natural, absorbent fabric like Cotton, Chinon Chiffon , Crepe, Georgette , Linen, Organza or Silk. These materials hold paint well and ensure the artwork is vibrant and long-lasting. You have to decide the painting technique depending on the fabric selected. Learning from the basic about the fabric types will help better understand the painting method . - Preparing the Fabric:
Wash and iron the fabric to remove any starch or dirt. This helps the paint adhere better and prevents unwanted smudging or fading. - Stretching the Fabric:
Secure the fabric onto a frame or flat surface using tape or clips. This keeps it taut and prevents wrinkles while painting. - Sketching the Design:
Use a light pencil or washable fabric marker to draw your design. For freehand artist pre sketching is not required. This serves as a guide for painting and helps maintain proportions. - Painting:
Using high-quality fabric painting medium like Binders , dyes , silk colors , silk dye serves the purpose of the keeping the fabric soft in spite of painting of the fabric . Apply with brushes, sponges, or even fingers depending on the desired texture. Allow each layer to dry before adding more details or color. There are different type of 3-D outliners available in market which are used to highlight the work and providing detailing . - Drying and Heat Setting:
Let the fabric dry completely (usually 24 hours). Then, heat-set the design using an iron on the reverse side or by following the paint manufacturer’s instructions. This step makes the design permanent and washable. - Final Touches:
Once set, the fabric can be sewn into garments, accessories, or used as-is. Hand-painted fabric turns into a wearable canvas that tells a story with every stroke.
